Kennel Cough: A Serious Canine Cold

Autumn brings cooler temperatures, more humidity and temperature changes — the perfect cocktail for respiratory infections to spread. And not just in people: our dogs are also vulnerable.

Unlike human colds (which don't spread to animals), dogs have their own contagious respiratory diseases. The most common is Kennel Cough.

What is Kennel Cough?

Kennel Cough (infectious tracheobronchitis) is a respiratory disease of viral and bacterial origin that affects the upper respiratory tract. It is extremely contagious — the virus can survive on objects that have had contact with an infected dog's saliva: water bowls, toys, beds…

How does it spread?

  • Through the air (aerosols from coughing or sneezing)
  • Through direct contact with an infected dog
  • Via contaminated objects (bowls, toys, floors)

It's especially common in kennels, doggy daycares, training classes and dog shows. Puppies, elderly dogs and animals with weakened immune systems are most susceptible.

Main symptoms

  • Dry, hoarse, strong cough (sounds like a goose honking)
  • Retching (as if trying to dislodge something from the throat)
  • Small white foamy vomits
  • Eye and nasal discharge
  • In more severe cases: fever, lethargy, loss of appetite

Is it dangerous?

Treated in time, Kennel Cough is not dangerous for most healthy adult dogs. However, in puppies, elderly or immunocompromised dogs it can develop into pneumonia, which can be serious.

Prevention and treatment

The best prevention is the Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccine. It's especially recommended if your dog frequents parks, daycares or kennels. Treatment usually includes antibiotics and in some cases antitussives.

If you suspect your dog has Kennel Cough, consult your vet before taking them to public areas to avoid infecting other dogs. At Interzoo Viriato we can vaccinate your dog and advise on the best protection. Book now!
