Pets and Coronavirus: What You Need to Know
Interview conducted in May 2020. Answers based on scientific knowledge available at that time.
Can animals catch coronavirus?
Available studies show that felines (domestic cats and big cats) can catch SARS-CoV-2, although with very mild symptoms, mainly respiratory. Cases in ferrets have also been observed.
In dogs, although antibodies against the virus have been isolated in some animals (indicating their body reacted to it), it has not been demonstrated that the virus replicates in canines or that they can transmit it to humans.
Hygiene protocol after walks
Dogs walk across surfaces where viral particles may be present. Although the risk is low, good practice includes:
- Cleaning paws with alcohol-based wet wipes when returning home
- Washing areas of the coat that may have had contact with external surfaces
- Keeping resting areas clean and disinfected regularly
Should I stop walking my dog?
No. Dogs need to go out for their physical and mental wellbeing. During periods of restrictions, the most important thing is to follow local rules and maintain social distancing with other pet owners too.
Should I worry about my pet's health?
Scientific evidence indicates that the risk of your pet becoming seriously ill from COVID-19 is very low. However, if you have active COVID-19, it is prudent to:
- Minimise physical contact with your pet while you are contagious
- Have someone else take care of them if possible
- If you notice respiratory symptoms in your pet, consult your vet
