Pet Vaccines
The Importance of Vaccinating Your Dog
Why is vaccinating your dog so important?
- Protection against serious diseases: vaccines protect against parvovirus, distemper, rabies and canine hepatitis — diseases that can be fatal and difficult to treat.
- Preventing contagion: by vaccinating your dog you prevent them from transmitting diseases to other animals and, in some cases, to people (zoonoses).
- Legal obligation: the rabies vaccine is mandatory by law in many Spanish autonomous communities.
- Herd immunity: when a high proportion of dogs are vaccinated, disease outbreaks are reduced across the entire canine community.
- Economic savings: treating preventable diseases can cost hundreds or thousands of euros. The vaccine is the smartest investment.
- Required for travel and activities: dog daycares, events, accommodation and international travel all require vaccination certificates.
Which vaccines does my dog need?
Mandatory vaccines
- Anti-rabies — Mandatory in most autonomous communities. Annual or biennial depending on the product.
Highly recommended vaccines (polyvalent)
- Canine distemper: viral disease affecting the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems.
- Infectious canine hepatitis (Adenovirus type 1): affects the liver and can be fatal.
- Leptospirosis: bacterial infection affecting kidneys and liver. Also a zoonosis (transmissible to humans).
- Parvovirus: causes severe haemorrhagic gastroenteritis, especially fatal in puppies.
- Canine parainfluenza: component of kennel cough.
Optional vaccines depending on lifestyle
- Bordetella bronchiseptica (kennel cough): recommended if your dog frequents parks, daycares or kennels.
- Leishmaniasis (LetiFend): highly recommended in Spain. Requires prior negative test. From 6 months onwards.
Vaccination schedule
Puppies start vaccines between 6 and 8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks. Most vaccines are then repeated annually. The exact schedule varies according to prior history, breed and age.
Always consult your vet to establish the most appropriate vaccination protocol for your dog.
