When is My Cat's Vomiting a Vet Emergency?
First: is it really a vomit?
Before panicking, check what your cat has expelled. Cats regularly bring up hairballs, which look like elongated sausages, are odourless and always appear outside the litter box. This is completely normal, especially in long-haired cats.
Indoor cats vs. outdoor cats
- Outdoor cats: more likely causes are viral or infectious origin, ingestion of sick rodents or birds, poisoning.
- Indoor-only cats: more related to floor disinfectants (from licking paws), needles and threads, or chronic diseases of the liver, pancreas or kidneys.
Age matters
- Young cats and kittens: higher risk of swallowing foreign objects. Always check the mouth, especially under the tongue — this is where sewing needles often get stuck.
- Adult cats: recurrent vomiting may indicate chronic diseases (kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis…)
- Senior cats: vomiting is a warning sign that warrants veterinary evaluation.
When is it an emergency?
Take your cat to the vet urgently if:
- They vomit blood or material resembling "coffee grounds"
- They vomit repeatedly in a few hours (more than 3-4 times)
- They have a bloated or tense abdomen
- They are lethargic, weak or disoriented
- They have not eaten or drunk for more than 24 hours
- You suspect they have swallowed an object, toxic plant or medication
- The cat is an unvaccinated kitten
When can it wait?
It can be a routine (non-urgent) consultation if:
- They have vomited 1-2 times and seem fine
- They eat, drink and behave normally
- It is clearly a hairball
In these cases, observe for 24-48 hours. If vomiting recurs or the cat worsens, consult your vet.
Important to remember
Cats, by nature, hide symptoms until they can no longer manage. When a cat shows obvious signs of illness, the situation has often been going on longer than it appears. When in doubt, it's always better to check.
